Our dedication to excellence ensures that our cattle are of the highest quality. Explore our story and discover what sets us apart in the industry.
EARLY 1900s
It was in the early 1900s when Ansley Powell Carney (the first of that name) started building his fortune by traveling from Meridian, Mississippi, to Texas and driving longhorn cattle back to Mississippi for sale. Cattle drives were a major economic activity at the time — with millions of head driven from Texas to railheads in Kansas and points east.
AP (as he was known) purchased more than 1,000 acres in Meridian and started a large dairy operation, known as Sunflower Dairy.
We get a kick out of the picture of AP, who built kennels to raise foxes and fox hounds for hunting.
AP so believed in the cattle business, that he started Dixie Stockyard in 1929, advertised as "the largest, most modern transfer facility in Mississippi." Dixie Stockyard is still in business today.
AS TIME WENT ON
AP's son (Bubba) was a "Jr." and the second to carry on the legacy, working with his dad in the cattle business at at Dixie Stockyard.
The third AP (Bill) took his love of animals and farming one step further — he became a veterinarian. With a personality larger that life, Bill was renowned for his knowledge and care of animals. He opened Poplar Springs Animal Hospital and was the person who designed the KA Farms logo.
TODAY
Bill's son Chip is the fourth Ansley Powell in the family to take on the legacy of KA Farms — and he is also a veterinarian. His expertise in animal husbandry and medicine is what drives the excellence in Angus cattle breeding at KA Farms.
